Some weddings are beautiful. Others feel like stepping into an entirely different world. Katy + Chase's wedding weekend at Historic Hill House was a little bit of both.
Rooted in their shared love of anime, Renaissance fairs, and all things a little otherworldly, their celebration became an exercise in bringing personal interests to life without taking them too literally. Think ethereal forest, woodland whimsy, a touch of folklore, and just enough fantasy to make the entire weekend feel like its own little universe.
The goal was never to create a theme. It was to create an atmosphere — one that felt unmistakably Katy + Chase.
The weekend began at Historic Hill House with an intimate welcome dinner for close family and guests staying on property. While the wedding day would lean into the ethereal and fantastical, the evening before offered a little nod to Texas.
It was a more relaxed introduction to the weekend, bringing everyone together before the main celebration. A little Southern character, plenty of time with their favorite people, and the kind of gathering that makes a wedding feel like more than just one day.
For the wedding day, the property itself became part of the design story.
Beneath the sprawling oak trees, with Spanish moss draping overhead, the ceremony felt like something out of an enchanted forest. There was a natural magic to the setting that didn't need much embellishment. Instead, we leaned into what was already there, allowing the landscape to set the scene.
Katy traded a traditional veil for a hooded cape, a choice that felt perfectly at home in the world we were creating. Romantic, a little mysterious, and just the right amount of fairytale.
It was a small departure from tradition that said so much about the couple and the experience we wanted to create.
Sun, Moon & Everything In Between
One of our favorite parts of the design was the interplay between two worlds: sun and moon.
Moths and butterflies became the visual language woven throughout the reception, representing the duality of the two themes. Even the head table carried the concept further, named after butterflies that resemble moths (and moths that resemble butterflies). A subtle detail for guests to discover, but one that added another layer to the story.
The seating chart became an installation of its own: a swarm of moths and butterflies displayed across the wall, each one waiting to be plucked away by a guest to reveal their seating assignment. Rather than simply directing guests to a table, it invited them to interact with the design.
The bar front continued the motif with an argyle-inspired pattern, featuring moths and butterflies nestled within each diamond and the couple's logo woven into the composition. It was graphic, unexpected, and one of those details that made the entire space feel thoughtfully connected.
The dance floor offered another interpretation, with an almost tarot-card-inspired composition featuring a moth, butterfly, and Katy + Chase's logo at its center.
Everywhere you looked, there was another little piece of the story.
Chasing the Sunset
If there was one moment that truly captured the ethereal side of the weekend, it was the dance floor installation.
Created by Edges Wild Studio, whose previous work included the fabulous display windows of Anthropologie, the installation transformed the space overhead into a canopy of fluffy pink clouds, illuminated from within by lights that created the glow of an otherworldly sunset.
The inspiration came from an image the couple loved during our design process: a sunset from One Piece. What could have easily remained a reference tucked away in a mood board became one of the most memorable design moments of the entire celebration.
It's one of our favorite parts of wedding design here at Epoch Co+ Events: taking something that means something to a couple, even if it's from a completely unexpected place, and finding a way to translate it into something tangible.
The result wasn't an overt anime reference or a literal recreation. It was a feeling. A sunset suspended above the dance floor, soft pink clouds, and a little bit of magic overhead.
A Sword, A Cake & A Very Katy + Chase Moment
Of course, no celebration inspired by Renaissance Faires would be complete without a sword.
When it came time to cut the cake, Katy + Chase brought out a sword they'd picked up at a Renaissance Faire the last year. It was the perfect way to incorporate something they genuinely loved into a traditional wedding moment.
And because no wedding story should be without a little unpredictability, Chase managed to cut his tongue while licking the sword afterward.
A moment that certainly wasn't on the design board, but one we're pretty sure they'll remember for a long time.
Because that's the thing about creating a wedding that feels personal: sometimes the most memorable details are the ones you could never have planned.

The Vibe
The Vibe
Looking back on Katy + Chase's weekend at Historic Hill House, what stands out most isn't any single installation, design detail, or carefully considered moment. It's how naturally everything came together to tell one cohesive story.
Their love of fantasy, anime, Renaissance fairs, and the natural world wasn't treated as a checklist of references to incorporate. Instead, those interests became the starting point for something more layered — a celebration that felt romantic without being overly traditional, whimsical without being kitschy, and thoughtfully designed without losing its sense of fun.
We believe the best weddings aren't necessarily the ones that follow every tradition or fit neatly into an aesthetic category. They're the ones that make you feel something. The ones where guests walk away knowing a little more about the people they're celebrating.
Katy + Chase didn't need their wedding to look like anyone else's version of a fairytale.
They got to create their own.
